Hannah DurdinWhen Richard asked me to come and give a talk as part of the Adventure Stories series, my first instinct was to say no. Although I spend a lot of time outdoors, having what I'd term 'mini-adventures', I've not climbed any of the 8000m-ers in the Himalayas, I've not swam in the ice cold waters of Norway, I've not run a multi-day ultra in the Alps.
I've swum in our local waters all year round for many years, I've run trail ultras around our coast line and across the moors, I've summited mountains in Wales and the Lake District. And what I do know is that spending as much time outside as possible is the key to keeping my mental health in a good place. As the new Director of Dartmoor based company, Moorland Guides, I'm passionate about enabling as many people as possible of all ages and from all walks of life, to discover the joys of being outside for themselves. So I'm going to talk about how you don't have to set yourself a mammoth challenge to get outside, the mental health benefits of being active outdoors, my recent Mountain Leader training, and share a few tales from some of my mini adventures |

Paula is a passionate long-distance hiker who enjoys tackling famous trails worldwide. She'll share her unique experience of completing 630-mile long South West Coast Path. What sets her journey apart is that instead of doing it all in one go, she made a hundred separate trips to the coast to complete the trail. Sometimes she went alone for some much-needed me-time, and other times she took friends along for a lively group adventure. Over the past decade, around a hundred friends and friends of friends have joined her, organised through a WhatsApp group. By now, Paula has become an expert in planning for South West Coast Path, often finding low-cost transport options. She'll talk about her various logistical approaches to the trail, favourite landscapes, and the best spots for refreshing cold swims (let's face it, it's never warm enough in England to call them anything else). Paula will also discuss how the coastline has changed over the years she's been hiking. Currently, she's using the trail as a springboard for her second Camino de Santiago, and during the break she'll be available to share tips on how you can embark on that adventure too.

Scott Butler
In no particular order of importance I'd describe myself as an adventurer, author, endurance athlete, firefighter and a dreamer. I'd don't wish to be pigeon holed into one particular thing and this is true of my adventures too. From ocean rowing to the marathon des sables. From running with a wheelbarrow through Eastern Europe to riding a bamboo bicycle through Africa. From Skateboarding around Denmark to microscooting across Italy- I like to mix it up!
My passion is to push my limits, meet new people, visit new places, inspire others and generally leave my mark on this world in my own little way! By the time I do my talk, I will have hopefully completed my latest challenge in Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria. Want to know what it was all about and if I succeeded? Then get yourself down to Adventure Stories! |
